| Saturday, 27 July, 2002, 16:26 GMT 17:26 UK Spaniards march on ![]() Corretja has been in superb form all week Saturday's results Juan Carlos Ferrero and Alex Corretja both beat Argentine opponents in semi-final matches to qualify for what will be an all-Spanish final at the Austrian Open in Kitzbuhel. Corretja destroyed sixth seed Gaston Gaudio 6-3 6-1 to stay on course for his second tournament win here. Ferrero encountered a few more problems before notching a 6-7 7-5 6-3 victory over Mariano Zabaleta. The eighth-seeded Corretja, champion here in 2000, overpowered Gaudio in much the same way he dealt with top seed and French Open champion Albert Costa in the quarter-finals.
Gaudio, one of the rising stars of the season with victories in the Barcelona and Mallorca Opens, used drop shots to counter Corretja's hard hitting. But Corretja refused to be outwitted and ran down every ball. In the second semi, Zabaleta took the first set in the tie break, and Ferrero managed to squeak out a 7-5 win in the second. The second seed then dominated in the third set to win the match after two hours and 40 minutes. |
