Canas eases past Vinciguerra
Guillermo Canas
Canas is looking for his second title of the year

Top seed Guillermo Canas of Argentina spoiled Andreas Vinciguerra's tour comeback, beating the local favorite 6-4 6-2 at the Swedish Open.

Vinciguerra, a two-time finalist in the Bastad event, was playing his first match since April, when he injured his back. He missed both the French Open and Wimbledon.

"It's tough coming back, but I'll do my best," said Vinciguerra, who grew up near the southern Swedish town.

"I hope to remain in the top 100 when the year is over."

Vinciguerra also missed the Australian Open in January after injuring his hand during football training before Christmas.

Magnus Norman
Norman took advantage of a fatigued Bjorkman

Canas finished off Vinciguerra in just over an hour.

Magnus Norman, a former two-time Swedish Open champion who is also coming back after a long injury break, rallied to oust fellow Swede Jonas Bjorkman 1-6 6-3 6-4.

Bjorkman, who won the Wimbledon doubles title on Sunday with partner Todd Woodbridge, had only an hour's practice on Bastad's slow clay before playing Norman.

Defending champion Andrea Gaudenzi of Italy was upset by Spanish qualifier Gorka Fraile, also losing in straight sets, 6-4 7-6 (7-4).

Former French Open champion Carlos Moya won his opening match in straight sets, defeating Olivier Rochus of Belgium 6-3 6-4.

Rochus upset Marat Safin just two weeks ago at Wimbledon but he could not transfer that form to the clay.

Moya is seeded third ahead of fellow Spaniard Tommy Robredo, a 5-7 6-2 6-2 winner over Denmark's Kristian Pless.

On the women's tour, top seed Arantxa Sanchez Vicario made a winning return after missing Wimbledon by defeating Denise Chladkova 6-3 3-6 6-0 in the first round of the French Community Championships in Brussels.

However, Martina Sucha made a surprise exit, the fourth seed losing in the first round 4-6 6-0 4-6 to Austria's Barbara Schwartz.
