Corretja claims Gstaad hat-trick

Spain's Alex Corretja claimed his first title of the season by beating Argentina's Gaston Gaudio in the final of the Swiss Open.

Corretja, the eighth seed, won 6-3 7-6 (7/3) 7-6 (7/3) to become the first player since compatriot Sergi Bruguera to win three titles in Gstaad.

"I have had four weeks rest since the French Open and that has helped me here," said Corretja. "I played well and I was aggressive in this final."

Corretja had previously won the title in 1998 and 2000.

It is the 10th time in 12 years that a Spaniard has won the event.

Only Russian Yevgeny Kafelnikov (1995) and Jiri Novak (2001) of the Czech Republic have interrupted Spain's reign.

Gaudio, currently 17th in the ATP Champions Race, had been seeking a third title this season after back-to-back wins in Barcelona and Mallorca.

"The way he served in the first two sets, I couldn't do anything against him," said the Argentine.

"The key was in the tie-break of the second set when he took control. I just couldn't play my game.

"At this altitude his serve, with all the top spin, is very heavy and it bothered me a lot more than it usually does at other places."
