| Saturday, 8 June, 2002, 08:44 GMT 09:44 UK Sculthorpe earns Daley comparison Sculthorpe has scored 98 points in seven games St Helens ace Paul Sculthorpe has been likened to Australian great Laurie Daley after his starring role in the demolition of Super League rivals Leeds. The makeshift stand-off contributed a try and six goals in the 41-14 victory at Headingley, taking his tally to 98 points in just seven matches since the loss of Sean Long. "He reminds me so much of Laurie Daley," said Saints coach Ian Millward. "When Canberra had salary-cap problems and injuries, Laurie just carried them.
"He was great but it was hard for me to single anybody out." St Helens ended Leeds' five-game unbeaten run in dramatic fashion, virtually cementing victory by halftime. Even the loss of scrum-half Tommy Martyn and forward Tim Jonkers with ankle injuries failed to disrupt upset Millward's men. The loss of Martyn and Jonkers have given Millward another headache, although Paul Newlove, Keiron Cunningham and Long should all due back by the end of July, if not earlier. "I'm real excited," said Millward. "I know we're going in the right direction. "Newlove will be back in a couple of weeks and then the other two will follow. I couldn't be happier." |
