The Rhinos came into the match in fine form after wins over Bradford, Wigan and Hull during May. But St Helens proved too much for the third time this season with some clinical finishing. Leeds attacked brightly but could not hold Saints at bay, and were 23-6 in front by the interval.
The Rhinos did score through Cummins after some good work from Ben Walker, who added the conversion. But tries from skipper Chris Joynt, winger Anthony Stewart and stand-off Paul Sculthorpe saw the Saints go ahead. And Sculthorpe added three of five goal attempts before Tommy Martyn scored an injury-time drop goal to complete the first-half scoring and put the visitors in command. Martyn did not make it out for the second half because of a leg injury, but Wellens took over as scrum-half with Darren Albert filling in at full-back. The home side pressed forward after the break but were undone after Senior and Cummins failed to finish off good chances. Sculthorpe increased Saints' lead with another penalty before Mark Calderwood cut the deficit. But St Helens hooker Mick Higham scored before Stewart and Higham completed a good day's work for Ian Millward's men. |
