Chapple leaves Woking
Former Woking manager Geoff Chapple
Chapple's second spell has not been a success
Woking manager Geoff Chapple has parted company with the Surrey club.

Chapple, in his second spell at Kingfield, met Woking chairman Chris Ingram on Monday morning in the wake of the Cards 5-1 defeat at Southport.

I think Woking Football Club needs a new direction

The pair agreed that Chapple's contract would be terminated with immediate effect.

Former Southampton midfielder Glenn Cockerill, will step up from the coach's role as acting manager.

Chapple's second spell at Kingifled began last November, but he was unable to reproduce the glory days of his earlier reign, when he masterminded an FA Cup win over West Bromwich Albion and landed the FA Trophy.

Woking are currently lying next to bottom of the Conference, just three points above Kettering.

Chapple said: "Unfortunately, the club has been in decline for three or four years, but I was not able to turn it around since I came back.

"I've set high standards throughout my career and at this moment in time, I think Woking football club needs a new direction.

"With two-thirds of the season left, the club still has a good chance to improve its position. I wish the club well and will continue to support them."

Chairman Ingram said: "It's a very sad day. Geoff is an essential part of the history of this club.

"Personally, some of the happiest days of my life have been spent following the exploits of Woking under the guidance of Geoff in the late eighties and nineties.

"However, we have collected only two points in the last thirty and things cannot carry on as they are, otherwise it will be certain relegation for us."
