Ferguson held talks with Bluebirds boss Lennie Lawrence at the weekend and gave the nod to loaning out the midfielder. The 22-year-old is understood to be happy to make the move and will talk to his pregnant wife before signing up to Cardiff. Chadwick has only made five appearances for United this season after enjoying some success in the side two years ago. The ambitious Division Two club are also interested in three Welsh internationals - Andy Melville, Steve Jenkins and John Robinson. Lawrence told BBC Sport Online that he expects Jenkins to complete his move from Huddersfield by the end of the week. But Lawrence fears that Fulham will not allow Melville to leave. The 55-capped centre back played all but 10 minutes of Saturday's defeat to Arsenal. "The current players are doing well, but this is a big club with limitless ambition," said Lawrence. "We're trying to strengthen the squad to prepare for all eventualities. We have to satisfy the fans." Former England Under-21 international Chadwick was once hailed as the next David Beckham. But his chances have been limited at Old Trafford as he continues to understudy the England skipper. The Bluebirds recently signed another Premiership winger on loan, Blackburn's Alan Mahon, as Lennie Lawrence sought to improve the service to his strike force.
Wigan are nearly out of sight at the top, and the second spot will be decided in a dogfight between Cardiff, Oldham, Crewe and Bristol City. Experienced centre-back Melville, who has 55 Wales caps, would be an ideal solution to plug a leaky defence. Spencer Prior has been out of form, Danny Gabbidon and Scott Young have struggled with injuries, and erratic Chinese international Fan Zhiyi is thought to be negotiating to terminate his contract.
Huddersfield skipper Steve Jenkins, 30, would also add experience to the Bluebirds defence. The former Swansea City man is thought to be unsettled at the cash-strapped Division Two outfit. Charlton midfielder Robinson, 31, could add energy and drive to the Cardiff team. The Zimbabwe-born player won 30 Wales caps before announcing his international retirement last year. |
