| Tuesday, 30 July, 2002, 07:48 GMT 08:48 UK Bradford players set to strike ![]() Chairman Geoffrey Richmond is under pressure Bradford City's players have refused to play in Tuesday's friendly at Hull in protest at their salaries not being paid for three months. Manager Nicky Law will be forced to field an inexperienced side at Boothferry Park and has uged his players to re-consider their decision. He said: "If players want to get fixed up with a new club, then what better place to play than at Hull where people will be watching?" Law will field a side made up of Bradford's few contracted professionals, trialists and young fringe players. The club is in financial crisis and manager Nicky Law has said it could even fold unless big-name capture Benito Carbone agrees not to accept cash he is owed. David Wetherall, Bradford's Professional Footballers' Association representative, had earlier dismissed reports that the players would refuse to turn out at Hull. "I don't know where this rumour has come from but it is certainly not true," he said. "It would be fair to say things are as bad as normal at the moment. We will be having our usual daily meeting but there is no plan to strike." Bantams winger Jamie Lawrence also claimed that football is keeping the players' minds off the club's problems. Lawrence said: "Football just takes all the stress off us at the minute.
"You have to ignore what's going on behind the scenes and coming to work helps you forget about it. "What happens will happen and you can't change anything. This is our job even though we aren't getting paid for it. "We're doing it for ourselves and if people come to watch the game and you're available on a free then they are going to be impressed with you at the minute." City's fate hangs in the balance in the next few days with a creditors meeting on Thursday and a Football League deadline looming a week later. The Division One side face expulsion from the league if they have not come up with a rescue package by 8 August. |
