| Tuesday, 18 February, 2003, 20:46 GMT Cup medal sold for 19,000 ![]() The medal won by Frank Thompson went for 19,000 A local council in Northern Ireland has failed to secure an FA Cup medal won by a man from its district in 1911. Frank Thompson from Ballynahinch in County Down was a member of the Bradford City team which won the Cup 92 years ago. And Down District Council expressed an interest in bidding for the medal when it came up for auction at Sotheby's on Tuesday. The Council had been prepared to bid up to 6,000 but the medal actually fetched 19,000 at a sporting memorabilia auction in London. Thompson, who died in 1977, was a member of the only Bradford side to win the FA Cup. 'Disappointed' They beat Newcastle United 1-0 in a replay at Crystal Palace. The 15 carat gold medal went to a Yorkshire buyer who is keen to put it on show at Bradford City's ground. "We are disappointed because we were prepared to bid up to 6,000," said Down Council member Jim Wells. "But it was so far beyond what we had anticipated that we were never going to get that medal." At the same auction, a collection of shirts worn by former Arsenal and Northern Ireland player Terry Neill went for 16,000. Included was the shirt Neill wore when he scored his only international goal - the winner in the 1-0 win over England at Wembley in 1972. |
