Mansfield and Brentford had to settle for a point after squandering chances galore at an icy, snow-covered Field Mill on the way to goalless draw.

The hosts squandered two golden chances in the opening five minutes, Liam Lawrence blasting over Wayne Corden's low cross and the unmarked Andy White fluffing a close-range header from a pinpoint Junior Mendes centre.

Brentford defender Scott Marshall also headed Tom Curtis' cross off the line with goalkeeper Paul Smith well beaten.

Brentford, who always looked dangerous on the break, were denied a first-half lead when goalkeeper Kevin Pilkington dived low to hold Rowan Vine's drive.

He also scrambled across his goalline to hold on to Stephen Hunt's quickly taken free-kick.

Mansfield's new �20,000 signing Mendes almost marked his home debut with a goal, but his low drive was turned around the post by the diving Smith.
