Crystal Palace 2-0 Grimsby

Crystal Palace ended Grimsby's four-match unbeaten run with an impressive performance at Selhurst Park.

Shaun Derry's deflected first-half strike and Dele Adebola's second league goal of the season sealed all three points.

The Mariners battled gamely but lacked the creativity to break down a stout Eagles rearguard.

Palace almost went in front after just 10 minutes when Darren Powell controlled brilliantly and unleashed a fierce drive that fizzed just over the crossbar from 20 yards.

Grimsby seemed to have weathered the storm until Derry's deflected strike gave Palace the lead.

The midfielder's 18-yard effort seemed to be drifting harmlessly to goalkeeper Danny Coyne.

But it then took a massive deflection off Jason Gavin to end up in the bottom left-hand corner of the goal.

Grimsby responded positively and Palace keeper Alex Kolinko had to save well from Stuart Campbell and Alan Pouton either side of the break.

But Palace always maintained the upper hand and some neat interplay in midfield created the opportunity for Adebola to double the advantage.

He latched on to a fine through ball before drilling a left-foot strike past the helpless Coyne to give his side breathing space.

Crystal Palace: Kolinko, Butterfield, Symons, Mullins, Johnson, Derry, Gray, Thomson, Black, Adebola, Powell.
Subs: Michopoulos, Riihilahti, Williams, Antwi, Borrowdale.

Grimsby: Coyne, McDermott, Gallimore, Ford, Campbell, Coldicott, Pouton, Gavin, Oster, Mansaram, Livingstone.
Subs: Allaway, Groves, Barnard, Soames, Parker.

Referee: T Parkes (Birmingham).
