| Monday, 25 November, 2002, 21:58 GMT Derby overcome Dons
Derby came from a goal down to beat Wimbledon 3-2 and end their opponents' sequence of seven matches unbeaten. Neil Shipperley gave the Dons an early lead but Derby equalised through Malcolm Christie to go in level at the break. Deon Burton put the Rams ahead early in the second half and substitute Lee Morris wrapped up the win before David Connolly responded for the visitors.
Wimbledon made a confident start and winger Joel McAnuff advanced down the right to cross for Shipperley to convert after just eight minutes. The lead lasted less than 10 minutes, but Derby were fortunate not to have their equaliser ruled out. Elliott headed down Craig Burley's in-swinging corner but Malcolm Christie looked to be in an offside position and was definitely interfering with play. Derby then had a penalty appeal turned down when Burton appeared to be shoved to the ground in an aerial challenge with Darren Holloway. Connolly had a great opportunity but managed to hit the post as he stretched to get his shot in under challenge from Chris Riggott.
The Dons ended the half in threatening fashion as McAnuff again cut inside and crossed left-footed but Shipperley was unable to get the crucial touch from close range. But the home side were ahead three minutes after the interval as Burton made the most of a hopeful cross, jumping high to send a looping header over Kelvin Davis. Derby then began to dominate and former Sheffield United player Morris sealed the win with 10 minutes to go. Collecting a through-ball from McLeod, he turned sharply in the box before letting fly with a shot which beat Davis low down to his left. However, Derby's intensity level dropped and Connolly pulled one back, heading in Darlington's cross from the left for his 10th goal in six games. Derby: Grant, Evatt, Elliott, Riggott, Barton, Lee, Burley, Boertien, Christie, Burton, McLeod. Subs: Oakes, Higginbotham, Morris, Kinkladze, Bolder. Wimbledon: Davis, Holloway, Gier, Leigertwood, Hawkins, McAnuff, Andersen, Reo-Coker, Darlington, Connolly, Shipperley. Subs: Heald, Francis, Agyemang, Morgan, Gray. Referee: M Clattenburg (Co Durham). |
