The 37-year-old Westwood capped a superb 2010 by becoming the world's number one golfer at the end of October. In doing so, the Nottinghamshire player ended American Tiger Woods's incredible 281-week reign at the top of the rankings. | CARL DORAN BLOG |
Westwood's achievement meant he became the first European to top the world rankings since Nick Faldo in 1994, and it was just reward for a season that included runner-up finishes at the Masters and the Open and a victory on the US Tour in the St. Jude Classic. But it wasn't just in individual events where Westwood shone. At the Ryder Cup, the Worksop golfer was immense, leading from the front and winning two-and-a-half points out of a possible four to make a telling contribution to Europe's eventual triumph over the United States. Westwood will again have the opportunity to follow in Faldo's footsteps in December, when he attempts to become the first golfer to win the Sports Personality trophy since Faldo in 1989.
