The Northern Irishman's victory also made him the first player from the United Kingdom to win a major since Paul Lawrie claimed the Open at Carnoustie in 1999. The 31-year-old then showed nerves of steel to win the final singles match at the Ryder Cup in October, earning the point which won back the trophy for Europe. And the rise of 'G-Mac', as he is affectionately know, has continued at pace, with victory at the Andalucia Valderrama Masters in October securing him a place in the world's top 10 golfers. McDowell has described his year as "amazing" and it could get even better yet - if he were to follow in the footsteps of Nick Faldo, who was the last golfer to win the BBC Sports Personality of the Year gong in 1989.
