The 22-year-old only joined the ranks of the seeded players on the eve of the tournament when Albert Costa withdrew, but he is well worth the place. Davydenko has enjoyed a spectacular year so far, collecting his first two ATP titles in Adelaide and Estoril.
With a runners-up spot to Andy Roddick in St Poelten, Austria, just before Roland Garros and three other quarter-final appearances, the Russian has certainly made his mark.
However, his favourite surfaces are clay and hardcourts, with grass still something of a mystery.
Davydenko has only played two top-flight matches on the surface, losing them both.
And having never got past the second round of any Grand Slam, Wimbledon seems the least likely venue for a major breakthrough.
