Clement has been consistently good at Wimbledon in the last two seasons without really taking the tournament by storm. On both occasions, he reached the last 16.
In 2001 he was overwhelmed in straight sets by Marat Safin.
He looked set to make amends in the same round against Nicolas Lapentti but lost out to the Ecuadorian after leading by two sets to one.
He reached the fourth round again at the French Open and, at best, will repeat that feat at Wimbledon this time around.
Clement has endured a tough 12 months in which he was plagued by injury.
The Frenchman missed his country's appearance in the Davis Cup final having done much to get them there.
He returned to the men's tour in March and looks to be slowly recapturing his form.
Previous to Roland Garros, though, he failed to get beyond the second round in nine events - although he registered an impressive win over Fernando Gonzalez in Monte Carlo and took Lleyton Hewitt to three sets in Hamburg.
Clement's game relies on his speed around the court and accurate groundstrokes - but it will be a major surprise if he can prosper on clay rather than his favoured hard courts.
