The 23-year-old Spaniard has never really relished playing on grass. His best achievement at Wimbledon to date has been a place in the third round.
But he was in superb form during the clay-court part of the season before injury curtailed his progress in the build-up to the French Open.
All fitness complaints looked well behind him as he stormed to victory at Roland Garros and Ferrero could finally prove himself on grass.
He is something of an exception at Wimbledon - one of the few Spaniards to actually make the trip to play on a surface which does not suit his expansive game from the back of the court.
But Andre Agassi managed to win from the baseline in 1992 and Ferrero is the likeliest candidate to follow suit, if anyone will.
