When Gonzalez hits the ball, his opponents immediately take notice such is the ferocity of his groundstrokes. The Chilean is revelling on the men's tour having moved into the top 20, climaxing in victory in May's World Team Cup in Dusseldorf.
He has also reached the quarter-final stages in Acapulco, Estoril and Hamburg this season before pushing Juan Carlos Ferrero in the French Open quarters.
Last year the 22-year-old Chilean collected titles on clay in his home country and in Palermo, and reached the fourth round at the Australian Open and the quarter-finals at the US Open.
He also managed to turn in a miserable set of results during the European clay-court season - just when he might have been expected to build on a good start to the year.
Gonzalez can go from world-beater to dud within the space of a set, let alone a season, but with a huge serve and some of the fiercest groundstrokes in the game he will always pose problems.
Tim Henman, who twice suffered against Gonzalez, admitted after the second encounter that he had never faced such a powerful player.
Victories over Pete Sampras, Carlos Moya and Ferrero helped establish the Chilean's reputation.
But while capable of blasting anyone off the court, Gonzalez is too inconsistent to be considered a true Grand Slam contender just yet.
