Safin has been some way off his best this season but returned to form at the International Series event in Barcelona, where he was runner-up to Carlos Moya. The Russian has been hampered by a string of injuries - most seriously stomach and wrist strains.
The injury forced him to miss the French Open but he has since recovered to take his place at Wimbledon.
Safin is brilliant and maddening in equal measure.
Still only 23, he has long been an established feature on the ATP Tour with an attractive all-court game which mixes power with flair.
When at his peak, he is virtually unbeatable.
But he is also notoriously inconsistent and is regularly let down by frustration and monumental mood swings while on court.
At times, he is his own worst enemy.
