 Watson's first round match took two and a half hours |
Guernsey's Heather Watson is through to the second round of the US Junior Open after a 6-2 5-7 6-1 win over world junior number 22 Ksenia Kirillova. Watson, seeded 11, took two and a half hours to overcome her Russian opponent on the hard courts of Flushing Meadows. The 17-year-old took the first set 6-2 in just over half an hour but when her first serve percentage dropped from 70% to 50% Kirillova squared the match. Watson came back strong in the deciding set and took it 6-1.
