British wildcard Daniel Cox has beaten the number seven seed Robert Smeets to record the biggest first-round upset of Jersey's AEGON Pro-Series tennis event. The 18-year-old, who is ranked 805 in the world, beat 24-year-old Australian, who is ranked 228, 7-6 6-1 on Wednesday at the Les Ormes club. Daniel Evans won the battle of the two British wildcards, beating Colin Fleming 6-4 7-5. The pair join British number three Alex Bogdanovic in the second round. Cox will face Ireland's Conor Niland in the second round while Evans has a tough task as he takes on German second seed and world number 142 Simon Stadler. Bogdanovic meets France's David Guez, who is ranked 80 places below him. The two other seeds in action on Wednesday both won. Italian sixth seed Andrea Stoppini beat Latvia's Deniss Pavlovs 6-2, 6-1 while eighth-seeded American Michael Yani beat Dutch qualifier Igor Sijsling in straight sets.
