Lloyd expects Andy Murray to return for the next tie in September |
John Lloyd says he has no plans to quit as Great Britain's Davis Cup captain following the 4-1 defeat by Ukraine. Britain face a relegation play-off at home to Poland in September as they try to stay in Euro/Africa Group One - the second division of the Davis Cup. Asked about his position, Lloyd told BBC Radio 5 Live: "That's up to my bosses, you can ask my bosses. "I've got a contract for a little while now and if they're not happy with me then that's up to them." Ukraine completed a 4-1 win over Britain in Glasgow on Sunday, with Ivan Sergeyev beating Josh Goodall 7-6 (7-3) 6-3 before Chris Eaton defeated Illya Marchenko 6-3 4-6 7-6 (7-5). | He knows we've got a match in September to stay up and I'm going to be asking him if he's ready to commit to it | But Lloyd remains committed to his role, adding: "I enjoy the job - I don't enjoy the losses, that's for sure. "If someone thinks they can do better with someone else then that's up to them, but as far as I know I'm still going to be here in September - unless they kick me out!" Britain's chances of winning the tie had reduced dramatically from the moment world number four Andy Murray withdrew beforehand because of a virus. | JONATHAN OVEREND BLOG | Questions have been raised about the 21-year-old's commitment to the Davis Cup as he focuses on trying to land major titles, but Lloyd believes the Scot will be available for September's relegation play-off. "I think he will," said Lloyd. "A lot of people have said with the stage where we are and as a big-time player, he won't want to play in those circumstances. "But to me it's playing for your country, I don't see the difference of playing in the World Group or Group One. Yes, it's bigger occasions, but if you want to play for your country, you want to play for your country.
Highlights - GB slump to Davis Cup defeat "He says he does and he's always committed to it, unfortunately a couple of times he's been injured and this time he's got a virus, but I expect him to play in September. "I'll be speaking to him very soon. He's been watching it on TV and he knows where we are now, he knows we've got a match in September to stay up and I'm going to be asking him if he's ready to commit to it." GB doubles specialist Ross Hutchins, a good friend of Murray, has backed the British number one to return to the Davis Cup team. "I saw him last week; he wasn't well, and he will be back to play," said Hutchins. "People always say 'selfish' and all this stuff but if he was fit he would have played this tie, and I think he wants to play the next tie. "There's no doubt in my mind he's a good guy to have around in the team."
