Raymond says Watson's gold in India was the turning point for her |
The head of the Channel Islands LTA says Guernsey's Heather Watson has the confidence to do well in next week's junior Australian Open. Hugh Raymond says the 16-year-old, who plays at Melbourne for the first time next week, has turned her game around. He feels the Commonwealth Youth games gold she won in India has given her the belief that she can be one of the best. "When she won that event with all those people watching she suddenly realised 'I'm capable of this'", he said. "In the latter part of last year after she came out on Wimbledon she'd slightly lost her confidence. But the confidence is back and from the comments I've had with her she's pushed forward," he added on BBC Guernsey. Since winning the gold medalfor Guernsey in Pune she risen over 70 places in the world junior rankings. She won the prestigious Yucatan World Cup in Mexico last year and made the final of the grade one Eddie Herr Invitational event shortly after. Those results have seen her get a seeding for the Australian Open junior championships, which begin next week.
