Heather Watson is seeded ninth in the Australian Open Junior Grand Slam

Young Guernsey tennis player Heather Watson made a great start to her bid for the Junior Australian Open with a straight sets first round victory.

The 16-year-old, seeded ninth in the Junior Grand Slam event, comfortably disposed of Australian local girl Harriet Sheahan 6-2 6-1.

Watson now plays South African Chanel Simmonds in the second round.

Watson last week reached the quarter-final stage down under in the Notting Hill Junior ITF in Melbourne.

Watson's fellow Brit, unseeded Hannah James, went out, losing to Serbia's Alexandra Krunic 2-6 6-4 7-5.
