Watson faces Elena Bogdan in the Quarter Finals |
Guernsey's Heather Watson is through to the quarter-finals of the Optus Nottinghill Junior ITF International in Melbourne, Australia. The 16-year-old beat Japanese 12th seed Miyabe Inoue 6-1 6-3 on Tuesday and will now face Elena Bogdan of Romania. Bogdan is ranked third in the world, 10 places higher than Watson, and is seeded second in the tournament. Watson's progress so far bodes well ahead of her entry into the Junior Australian Open next week. She is one of only two British players left in the tournament, the other being Laura Robson the winner of Junior Wimbledon in 2008. Watson beat Kyra Shroff from India in straight sets following a tie-break in the second 6-1 7-6(4) on Monday. In the first round she lost the first set to Olivia Rich, from Australia, before fighting back to win 2-6 6-3 6-1. The teenager went out in the first round of the doubles with Canadian partner Eugenie Bouchard to Czech pairing Martina Borecka and Martina Kubicikova 6-1 6-1.
