Watson has made it through to the second round at Flushing Meadows |
Guernsey's national under-16 tennis champion Heather Watson won her first-round match at the US Open girl's tournament in straight sets on Monday. The 16-year-old beat America's Lauren McHale 6-3, 6-4 to set up a second-round tie with the Thai number three seed Noppawan Lertcheewakarn. Lertcheewakarn lost to Britain's Laura Robson in the final of the girl's singles at Wimbledon in June. But Watson is out of the doubles after losing her first-round match. Partnered by the United States' Nicole Bartnik the pair lost 6-4 6-3 to the Dutch fifth seeds Richel Hogenkamp and Arantxa Rus.
