Ex-Worcester coach Mike Ruddock gave Jones his only Wales cap |
Worcester and Wales fly-half Matthew Jones has completed his move to Newport Gwent Dragons. The 26-year-old will compete with Jason Tovey for the 10 jersey at Rodney Parade, with Japan international James Arlidge set to depart in the summer. "I am delighted to be joining the Dragons, especially after the season they have just completed," said Jones. "In talking to the players there seems to be a great team spirit, eagerness to improve and play an attractive style." New Zealander Arlidge scored 259 points in 40 games at the Rodney Parade region. Jones began his career at the Ospreys, making 47 appearances for the Swansea-based region after his 2004 debut. He played for hometown-club Bridgend, Moseley and London Welsh before then-Worcester coach Mike Ruddock snapped him up for the Warriors. Former national coach Ruddock gave Jones his solitary cap as a replacement in the 3-60 win over Canada on Wales' 2005 summer tour of North America. "We are delighted to have signed Matthew and he is another Welsh player in our squad," said Dragons rugby manager Robert Beale. "With Jason and Matthew in our squad next year, competition for the outside-half berth should be intense." Jones added: "I am relishing challenging Jason Tovey for the number 10 spot and looking forward to competing in the Magners League and Heineken Cup."
