James Copsey scored for Jersey late in the game |
Jersey continued their push for promotion from National Two South with a 33-6 bonus-point win over Southend. First-half tries from Dai Maddocks and Donovan Sanders gave the islanders a 12-3 lead at the break. A penalty try and further touchdowns from Nick Trower and James Copsey made the game safe and kept Jersey second in the table, still two points off top. Coach Ben Harvey said: "It was a very tough game, as we knew it was going to be, and we were pleased at the end." Jersey have not been beaten on home turf at St Peter for more than two years and are hoping to complete back-to-back promotions. Harvey told BBC Radio Jersey: "The first half penalty count was atrocious and we said that to the boys at half time. "The boys came out with a very disciplined performance in the second half and I thought we built on a lot of hard work from the first half." The top side at the end of the season - currently Ealing - will go up automatically, whilst the second-placed team will go into a play-off with their counterparts from the North. Jersey now have just three league matches left to close the gap.
