Anaheim Angels heroes John Lackey and Garret Anderson could barely contain their joy after claiming the World Series with a 4-1 win over San Francisco in game seven.

Rookie pitcher Lackey and outfielder Garret led the way to victory, while Anaheim's Troy Glaus was voted World Series MVP after hitting .385 with three home runs and eight RBIs.

"I can't believe it," Anderson said. "It's been a long year - a testament to the guys who never gave up."

Lackey became the first rookie in 93 years to win a game seven of a World Series.

He said: "It's not bad. This is where you want to be. It's a long way from Salt Lake.

"It wasn't long ago I was in the minor leagues and I just wanted to step up and help these guys out," said Lackey, called up from Triple-A Salt Lake City in June.

"I just really wanted to come out and give a good effort, give the guys a chance to win.

"We have a team that's going to battle for you. I left it all out there, I was putting everything I had into every pitch."

Anderson hit a three-run double off Livan Hernandez in the third inning for a 4-1 lead as the Angels once again came from behind.

He said: "Well, I just wanted to get into a situation where I'd be able to hit my pitch, not do too much."

Unsung, despite a stellar career, Anderson's hit - a line drive into the right-field corner that easily scored all three runners - will put him in highlight reels for a long time.

Giants slugger Barry Bonds had one of the most dominant performances in Series history but still ended up on the losing side.

Bonds, who ended with an 8-for-17 (.471) record with four homers, a .700 on-base percentage and 1.294 slugging percentage, said: "You want the results to be different.

"They outplayed us, they deserve it. They beat us. They're world champions."
