| Sunday, 20 October, 2002, 03:56 GMT 04:56 UK Giants land first win ![]() Bonds has five postseason home runs San Francisco Giants beat Anaheim Angels 4-3 in the opening game of baseball's best-of-seven World Series. The Giants went ahead in the second inning at Edison Field with a Barry Bonds homer over the right-field wall off Jarrod Washburn. Bonds, who set the season home run record with 73 in 2001, has five home runs in the postseason, one short of the record. He also became the 26th player in major league history to homer in his first World Series at bat. San Francisco doubled their lead later in the same inning when Reggie Sanders homered off Washburn.
But Anaheim's Troy Glaus hit back with a homer in the bottom of the second against the Giants' Jason Schmidt. The Giants went 4-1 ahead in the top of the sixth inning when JT Snow hit a two-run home run to left field with two outs. The Angels narrowed the gap early in the bottom half of the inning when Glaus hit his second homer off Schmidt. The pitcher's problems continued when he walked Brad Fullmer and Adam Kennedy drove in the designated hitter with a single to centre cutting the Giants lead to 4-3. But San Francisco closer Robb Nenn was able to secure the three outs in the ninth. The World Series annually features the top two teams from major league baseball's American Leagues and National Leagues. This is the first World Series between two wild card teams, and the fourth all-California series. Former Angels owner Jackie Autry threw out the ceremonial first pitch to former Angels pitcher Chuck Finley, who was acting as the catcher. The Angels won a club record 99 games during the regular season. They beat the New York Yankees in the division series and the Minnesota Twins in the American League championship series to reach their first World Series in franchise history. The Giants won 95 games to take the NL wild-card berth. And they advanced to their first World Series since 1989 with play-off wins over Atlanta in the division series and St Louis in the National League championship series. |
