| Wednesday, 23 October, 2002, 04:10 GMT 05:10 UK Visiting Angels upset Giants ![]() Down and out: San Francisco's Kenny Lofton San Francisco 4-10 Anaheim Anaheim lead the best-of-seven series 2-1. Barry Bonds' hopes of landing a first World Series title suffered a big setback when the free-scoring Anaheim Angels mauled his San Francisco Giants 10-4 in game three. The Angels broke the game open in the third and fourth innings, scoring eight runs and batting through the order on both occasions. And they held on to go 2-1 up in the best-of-seven series despite a Bonds-inspired rally.
Playing at San Francisco's PacBell stadium for the first time in a World Series, Bonds contributed another home run to the host's cause. The fifth-innings blast, off Anaheim starter Ramon Ortiz, earned him the distinction of becoming the first-ever player to score seven homers in one post-season. But it was not enough to get the Giants back in the game, as the Angels racked up hits and runs almost at will. Scott Spiezio led the way with three RBIs, but almost everyone of his team-mates got in on the act in a superb display of team batting. The LA outfit will now take lots of confidence into Wednesday's game four, which also takes place in San Francisco. And Giants manager Dusty Baker knows that his team are up against a hitting machine. "It was a tough night for us," he said. "They've been hitting the last two games. I don't know, hopefully they hit themselves out." |
