| Friday, 25 October, 2002, 04:17 GMT 05:17 UK Bonds on the brink ![]() Barry Bonds punished the Angels' pitching San Francisco 16-4 Anaheim Giants lead the best-of-seven series 3-2. Barry Bonds stands on the brink of winning his first World Series after helping San Francisco to an emphatic 16-4 win over Anaheim. The big slugger had three hits on the night, taking advantage of the Angels' decision to pitch to him instead of serving up walks. But he was upstaged by his middle-order team-mate Jeff Kent, who smashed two huge home runs into the PacBell Park stands.
Having made terrible starts to their first two home games, San Francisco opened up a 6-0 cushion within two innings courtesy of RBIs from Bonds and Benito Santiago. And, although the hosts gave up a flurry of runs to Anaheim in the fifth, Kent then put the game away with back-to-back homers.
The game was almost marred by a strange incident towards the end, however. Giants coach Dusty Baker's son unintentionally got mixed up in the action by stepping onto the field too early to collect Kenny Lofton's discarded bat. As JT Snow raced to score at homeplate, he was forced to sweep the three-year-old boy into his arms, and dragged him out of harm's way. |
