Only a fraction of a second separated Richardson (L) and Jacklin |
Four Island records were set on the final day of the British Swimming Championships in Sheffield on Sunday. Ebony Jacklin broke Emma Hirst's seven year record in the 50 metre freestyle, stopping the clock in 27.77 seconds. Unfortunately for Jacklin, Iona Richardson went 0.10 better in the next heat to take the Island Record. The pair, then joined by Emma Glendening and Kerrie Smith, set another Island mark, this time in the 4x100 freestyle relay. The girls stopped the clock in 4 minutes 4.44 seconds to break the Island record by three seconds. Richardson also claimed the 100 freestyle record after leading off the relay in a time of 59.82 seconds. Island head coach Nathan Jegou felt it was a great way to finish the Championships. "It's been a great week, a great season actually," he told BBC Radio Jersey. "To finish off the season with four Island records is cool, it pretty much sums up the whole year." "We had a great Island Games, then Ella Dias (claimed a silver medal) earlier in the Championships, plus a load of personal bests as well. I'm looking forward to next year now."
