Norfolk won gold in the men's quad singles at the last two Paralympics |
World number one Peter Norfolk was denied a fifth British Open crown in the quad singles as world number two David Wagner secured a 6-3 6-2 triumph. Norfolk, partnered by Jamie Burdekin, also lost the quad doubles final. Paralympic champions Wagner and Nick Taylor retained their title in Nottingham with a 6-1 6-7 (3-7) 6-4 win over the Paralympic bronze medallists. Shingo Kunieda of Japan won his third successive men's singles British Open title, defeating Stephane Houdet. Wagner built a 3-0 lead against Norfolk, and although the Briton won the next two games, a run of four in succession gave Wagner the set. The American won four out of five games in the second set, and though Norfolk saved four match points at 5-2 down, he could not prevent a 6-2 6-3 defeat. Kunieda made a strong start against world number two Houdet, racing to a 4-0 lead, and went on to seal a 6-2 7-6 win. Houdet looked as though he would make a comeback in the singles final, claiming five of seven games in the second set having gone 3-0 behind. He served for the set at 6-5 but Kunieda forced the tie-break, in which he won the first five points. An exquisite backhand slice set up four match points and only one was needed as Houdet sent a forehand into the net. Houdet then teamed up with Michael Jeremiasz to win the doubles title. The top seeds beat second seeds Maikel Scheffers and Ronald Vink of the Netherlands 7-6 6-0. After their women's singles final on Friday, Korie Homan and Esther Vergeer paired up to retain the women's doubles title, beating Florence Gravellier of France and Jiske Griffioen of the Netherlands 6-2, 6-1.
