Paralympic champion Peter Norfolk made a comfortable start to his quad singles title defence at the British Open wheelchair tennis championship. Norfolk beat Italy's Antonio Raffaele 6-1 6-0 and will face former champion Shraga Weinberg of Israel in Thursday's quarter-finals in Nottingham Fellow Britain Jamie Burdekin also advanced but Andrew Lapthorne went out after losing to American Nick Taylor. Lapthorne came close against the fourth seed but lost 3-6 6-4 6-2. Beijing silver medallist and world number three Johan Andersson also exited after losing 6-4 6-1 to Dorrie Timmermans of the Netherlands. In the women's singles, world number one Esther Vergeer eased into the last four after beating Daniela di Toro of Australia 6-1 6-2 for her 362nd consecutive singles win and will next face third seed Florence Gravellier of France. The other semi-final will see an all-Dutch clash between second seed Korie Homan and world number four Sharon Walraven. Defending champion Shingo Kunieda of Japan reached the quarter-finals of the men's singles beating Switzerland's Daniel Pellegrina without losing a game and fourth seed Michael Jeremiasz also advanced with a 6-4 6-2 success over local favourite David Phillipson.
