'Quadfather' claims gold

Wheelchair tennis player Peter Norfolk claimed a glorious gold for Britain on Sunday after successfully defending his Paralympic quad singles title.

Norfolk - nicknamed the "Quadfather" - easily beat Sweden's Johan Andersson 6-2 6-2 in just over an hour.

The 47-year-old adds the title to the bronze he won in the quad doubles alongside Jamie Burdekin on Saturday.

"The atmosphere out there was the best I've ever played in. The enthusiasm of the crowd was fantastic," he said.

The Hampshire player, who gave himself the nickname of the "The Quadfather", entered the court to the theme from 1972 gangster film The Godfather.

Norfolk took the first set in 31 minutes and was 4-0 up in the second when he lost his service.

He fought back though to earn two match points at 5-2, and went on to win the game in 61 minutes.

Norfolk, due to be a father for the first time later this year, added: "I felt positive, upbeat and ready for the challenge. The Paralympics is always tough. Every match is pressure.

"Johan played well but I think nerves got the better of him which isn't surprising with a crowd of 12,000 watching.

"Athens was hard emotionally, and the emotion hasn't hit me yet but to defend my gold medal - I'm ecstatic."

He also said he was determined to go for a third gold in London.

"I'm going to be there," he said. "If this is what it's like in China, imagine what it will be like in London. I can't wait."
