Alison Merrien and Simon Skelton won the nail-baiting final of the mixed pairs at the World Indoor Bowls Championships in Norfolk.

Guernsey's Merrien and Skelton, from Nottingham, beat the English pairing of Ellen Falkner and Greg Harlow 5-7 8-7 2-0 on Tuesday.

Skelton, whose final bowl gave the pair the win in the tie-break said: "I felt I was a little bit short with it.

"But, obviously I tried to encourage it along and it did enough in the end."

He added: "I'm very pleased with the result."

Merrien, who has twice been a runner-up in the ladies singles, said of the win: "It's nice to be a bride and not a bridesmaid anymore."
