Alison Merrien goes out in bowls World Cup semi-finals

Merrien defeated Edwards in the first match of the tournament

Guernsey bowls star Alison Merrien has been knocked out at the semi-final stage of the sport's World Cup in Warilla, Australia.

Merrien, who lies second in the world rankings, lost to the defending champion Jo Edwards, who is seventh.

The Guernsey player took the first-leg 7-6, but lost the second 6-9 before Edwards edged the tie-break 3-2.

Merrien had previously beaten the New Zealander in a tie-break in the opening match of the tournament.

Alison's husband, Ian Merrien, was the only other British competitor at the tournament, following the flight disruption caused by the Icelandic volcano eruption, and he finished 15th in the men's singles.
