Merrien gets her singles campaign underway against Janice Gower

Alison Merrien and Simon Skelton made the semi-finals of the mixed pairs at the World Indoor Bowls Championships by defeating top seeds Carol Ashby and Alex Marshall.

Marshall is a five-time world singles champion, while Ashby has previously won the mixed pairs title.

However it was Merrien, from Guernsey, and Skelton, from Nottingham, who prevailed 8-3 10-3 in Norfolk on Friday.

Merrien and Skelton will play their next pairs game in Sunday's semi-final.

Before that, Merrien will get her singles campaign underway on Saturday, when she plays England's Janice Gower.

Skelton went out in the semi-finals of the men's pairs on Monday, but has progressed to the second round of the singles, in which he is seeded fifth.
