Colombians open up nine-point lead in Division One

Hockey

Investec Colombians beat title rivals Legis Independents 3-1 to open up a nine-point lead at the top of Guernsey's Division One.

An own goal gave Colombians an early lead, quickly doubled by Jonny Guille before Andy Alford pulled a goal back.

Indies pressed hard for an equaliser, which looked more likely when Phil Radford was sent to the sin bin.

But Colombians kept their nerve, wrapping up victory with a Matt de la Mare goal from a short corner.

Colombians captain Matt Watson said: "On balance it was a pretty even game and in fairness, Indies play hockey the right way and if they get another couple of seasons together they will become a real threat.

"We deserved the three points and it puts a bit of daylight between us and them.

"We still have a way to go in the league this year but if we carry on improving, we will be there or thereabouts at the end of the season."

Colombians are next in action on Saturday when they take on Cenkos Yobbos, while Indies face Collins Stewart Clubhouse Casuals on Sunday.
