Ella Dias won silver in the 800m freestyle to become the first Jersey swimmer to finish on the podium at the National Championships since 2005. The AIB Tigers swimmer, 12, finished in nine minutes 33 seconds in Sheffield to claim a first top-three placing since Simon Le Couilliard in 2005. In a later heat, thirteen-year-old Emily Bashforth also had a great swim. She broke Rosie Barrett's Island record which was set in 2001, to finish sixth in her age group in 9 minutes 24.99. AIB Tigers coach Nathan Jegou was stunned with the results. | Ella's had the week of her life and Emily pulled one out of the bag AIB Tigers coach Nathan Jegou |
He told BBC Radio Jersey: "It was a bit of a shock to win a medal, Ella's had the week of her life and Emily pulled one out of the bag. "Emily deserved it especially after the great year of training she's done, so to break the senior and junior Island records is great for her." The National Championships continue next week with the older age groups and open divisions.
