Kerrie Smith set a new junior Island record in Sheffield on Saturday |
Jersey's Kerrie Smith broke a junior Island record and met two national qualifying times at the City of Derby swim meet in Sheffield on Saturday. Smith, 15, set a new best of two minutes 26.54 seconds to break her own junior 200m backstroke record. The time was also quick enough to earn her a spot at the national championships in July. Smith qualified for the 100m backstroke stopping the clock in a time of one minute 8.47 seconds. Grace Le Couilliard, younger sister of Commonwealth and Island Games star Simon Le Couilliard, will also be going to the national championships after a strong swim of two minutes 28.86 seconds in the 200m backstroke. The AIB Tigers team came away from Sheffield with eight medals, including twelve-year-old Henry Job picking up golds in the 100m, 200m and 400m freestyle. He also picked up the best overall boy title for his age group. "All in all a good weekend, most of them swam well, Kerrie looked quick and it is nice to see Henry coming along," said coach Nathan Jegou "Now we just get back in and do it all again next weekend and the one after that." The team now heads for the Channel Island Championships, firstly the distance events in Jersey on Saturday, 17 January with the conclusion coming in Guernsey the following weekend.
