Glendening was only three seconds off breaking the senior record |
Thirteen-year-old AIB Tigers swimmer Katy Glendening set a new Jersey junior 800m freestyle record at the Channel Island Championships on Saturday. She finished in nine minutes and 13.29 seconds, breaking Rosie Barrett's seven-year record - and only finishing three seconds off the senior record. The time was also quick enough to book a place in the island team for the Aland Games in June. Coach Nathan Jegou said: "Katy stole the show with her swim." "She smashed the medal time for the Island Games, so you'd imagine that would get her there, and she only just missed the island senior record - for a 13-year-old that's good going." | Another good weekend... it proves the training is paying off AIB Tigers coach Nathan Jegou | There were also good swims from Island Games-bound Tom Gallichan in the 1500m freestyle as well as 12-year-old Henry Job, who continues to improve. Jegou told BBC Radio Jersey: "Another good weekend, following on from last week in Sheffield, it proves the training is paying off. "It's exciting for most of the swimmers, when they get in and swim personal bests in events they're not suited to, like these distance events, they set themselves up well for next weekend." Jersey's best swimmers now head to Guernsey next weekend for the second half of the Channel Island Championships at Beau Sejour.
