A speedway promoter who cancelled a meeting which was set to feature the Oxford Cheetah's says he is confident the fixture will be re-arranged.

A four-team tournament between Oxford, Reading, Swindon and Cradley was scheduled for 30 July.

However, the event had to be cancelled due to riders' commitments.

Swindon co-promoter Gary Patchett told BBC Oxford: "I'm absolutely committed to re-staging this meeting before the season has finished."

The decision was made to cancel the meeting after it became clear that the clubs would not be able to field riders with genuine links to the teams.

"It (the meeting) didn't want to have just four riders wearing an Oxford bib or a Reading bib. It has got to mean something to the supporters too and we just weren't going to be able to replace those (withdrawals) with like-for-like riders," Patchett added.

"It is our intention to restage this meeting at a later date in the season, to be announced shortly, when the international fixture list is less congested."

The meeting was to have been a one-off comeback for the Oxford team, who have been out of league action for two years.
