Cheetahs set for one-off comeback

An Oxford speedway team will be taking to the track at Swindon later this year as campaigners fight to keep the name of the Cheetahs alive.

Oxford fans have spent two years without any league racing at Cowley, after difficulties with promoters and landlords forced the club to close.

However a Cheetahs side will compete in a four-team tournament organised by Robins co-owner Gary Patchett.

The meeting on 30 July will involve the hosts Oxford, Cradley and Reading.

Patchett said: "We can't do much about bringing speedway back to places like Oxford, Reading and Cradley.

"But I don't see why we can't give supporters a chance to see a team in their colours, even if it is just one meeting a year."
