| Junior Brits suffer semi heartache ![]() Keothavong was hampered by injury Dreams of an unprecedented all-British junior final at Wimbledon were shattered when Elena Baltacha and Anne Keothavong both crashed out at the semi final stage. Baltacha, who plays under the Scottish saltire, squandered a first-set lead going down to Indonesia's Angelique Widjaja 5-7 7-6 6-2, while injury-hit Keothavong was comprehensively beaten by Dinara Safina. It was a disapointing blow for the two 17-year-olds after their dramatic victories on the way to the last four. Keothavong's progress on Court One was hampered by a leg injury that had troubled her throughout the week. Despite breaking her opponent's serve when 4-0 down in the second set, defeat always looked inevitable for the youngster from Hackney who eventually went down 6-2 6-1.
But Keothavong refused to use the injury as an excuse for her defeat. "I was disappointed with the way I played, particularly in front of a large crowd, as I didn't perform as well as I can. "She hits the ball hard but I can hit the ball hard as well and I've played other girls who hit it just as hard in previous rounds." Keothavong had not set foot on Court One prior to the match and admitted to finding it "nerve-wracking" at the start of the match. "I had been happy on the outside courts but it was a great experience, I've had good fun and a good week and hopefully I can now learn from it." Keothavong has been playing a limited number of tournaments on the seniors tour but as of September, when she turns 18, she will be playing full-time Baltacha turns 18 a month earlier and like her compatriot is keen to carry through what she has learnt onto the seniors tour and leave the juniors, around whom she now feels like a "granny".
"It has given me a boost, I've had fun and hopefully it will not stop here. "I know where I am and I now know I'm not far off, but there are things I need to work on in order to improve." Widjaja put on an impressive display to come back from a set and 2-0 down to beat a determined Baltacha. "I began to hurry and I tensed up a bit, lost power and made some stupid errors. "It was a tough match against a good player but I was pleased with myself. I played hard although it wasn't good enough." Widjaja's defensive game plan proved too strong for the Briton, whose powerful serve stills lacks the consistency to win the big points. Baltacha recovered from a break down to take the opening set, but the unreliability of her serve was highlighted when she lost the second set in the tie-break 7-2. She was forced to fight back again after losing her service early in the decider, but lost it once more and with it the match. |
