British girls make Wimbledon semis
Baltacha is one for the future
Baltacha is one for the future
British hopefuls Elena Baltacha and Anne Keothavong are through to the semi-finals of the Wimbledon girls' junior championship.

The pair are in different halves of the draw so will not meet in the final four, raising the prospect of an all-British final.

Scotland's Baltacha beat 17-year-old beat Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova in a gruelling three-set match 7-5 6-7 (4/7) 9-7.

Keothavong overcame another Russian, Anna Bastrikova, also in three sets, winning 3-6 7-6 (7/5) 7-5.

Baltacha won the first set but lost the second on a tie-break. She finally won the decider 9-7.

Baltacha is the daughter of a top Russian footballer, Sergei, who starred with Dynamo Kiev before bringing his family to Britain when he joined Ipswich Town.

She also entered the senior women's championship this year but was overawed when her first match was moved to Centre Court and lost in straight sets to Nathalie Dechy of France.
