![]() | Tuesday, 19 June, 2001, 16:42 GMT 17:42 UK Baltacha out-classed by Martinez ![]() Baltacha faces the world number 37 at Wimbledon Scotland's teenage tennis hope Elena Baltacha lost to former Wimbledon champion Conchita Martinez in the first round of the Britannic Asset Management international championship at Eastbourne. Baltacha was beaten 6-3 6-3 in the final event before she meets Nathalie Dechy in the first round at Wimbledon. The Kiev-born Scot had qualified for Eastbourne by beating Virginie Razzano, ranked more than 250 places above her. But she never looked like repeating that shock result against Martinez after the Spaniard broke Baltacha's opening serve. Martinez had her chasing a succession of lost causes with her sharp returning and pin-point accuracy from the baseline. The 29-year-old took the first set in 36 minutes and two quick breaks at the start of the second enabled her to wrap up victory by the same margin even though Baltacha pulled one of them back and occasionally landed a powerful delivery. She can now look forward to her Wimbledon debut against Dechy of France next week. Dechy is ranked number 37 in the world - Baltacha is ranked 356th. | See also: Other top Tennis stories: Links to top Tennis stories are at the foot of the page. | ||
