Champion Pete Sampras and third favourite Lleyton Hewitt were dumped out of Wimbledon on a dramatic start to the second week.

Britain's last remaining hope is Tim Henman, who trails Todd Martin 2-1 overnight on Monday, after Greg Rusedski fell to Goran Ivanisevic.

In the women's tournament, Venus Williams eased through to the last eight while younger sister Serena will meet Jennifer Capriati in the quarter-finals.

Sampras stunned

Pete Sampras, the seven-times champion, crashed out to rising Swiss star Roger Federer.

The 19-year-old triumphed in an enthralling five-set match, which was the first Wimbledon defeat in five years for the American.

Federer will now play either Britain's Tim Henman or American Todd Martin.

Martin leads two sets to one overnight, and the game will resume on centre court on Tuesday.

Rafter rallies

But fellow Aussie Patrick Rafter, last year's losing finalist, was the first men's seed to advance into the quarter-finals.

Rafter did have an early scare, needing to battle back from a set down to beat the Russian Mikhail Youzhny2-6 6-3 6-2 7-5.

He will now play Sweden's 10th seed Thomas Enqvist who ousted Guillermo Canas of Argentina 6-3, 6-3, 6-1 in 1hr 42 mins.

Canas, who shocked seventh seed Yevgeny Kafelnikov in the third round, could not go the extra step as the Swede continued his impressive form in reaching the last eight for the first time in seven attempts.

Super Safin

Russian fourth seed Marat Safin found his form again with a convincing straight sets victory over the Frenchman Arnaud Clement.

Safin, who won the US Open last year, has endured a poor run of form this season, but he put all that behind him destroying Clement 6-0 6-2 6-3.

Safin next faces Ivanisevic for a place in the last four.

Easy for Agassi

Second seed Andre Agassi proved too savvy for the 19th seed Nicolas Kiefer of Germany winning in straight sets 6-3 7-5 7-5.

It is the first time that Agassi has reached the quarter-finals without losing a set.

Agassi now faces Escude in the last eight after the Frenchman brought Hewitt's Wimbledon dream to an end.

Venus stars

There were no major shocks in the women's draw, with Venus Williams, her sister Serena, Lindsay Davenport and Kim Clijsters all progressing.
