| |  Saturday, 30 June, 2001, 15:45 GMT 16:45 UK Canas topples Kafelnikov Kafelnikov is the first top 10 men's seed to fall this year Yevgeny Kafelnikov became the latest seed to be dumped out of Wimbledon on the infamous number two court. The number seven seed was beaten by Argentina's Guillermo Canas 3-6 6-1 6-3 7-6 in the third round in the biggest upset of the men's tournament so far. In a rain-interrupted match on the court dubbed the 'graveyard of the champions' for the number of high-profile players to lose there, the Russian struggled for much of the clash. Canas, who had not gone beyond the second round at Wimbledon before, earned a quarter-final against Swedish 10th seed Thomas Enqvist. Kafelnikov took the first set but his serve then let him down badly.
The fourth set was an intriguing battle but after taking a 5-3 lead, Kafelnikov crumbled to be swept away in the tie-break. Meanwhile, Enqvist progressed after defeating Zimbabwe's Wayne Black in straight sets 7-5 6-4 6-2. American second seed Andre Agassi cruised past Nicolas Massu of Chile, winning 6-3 6-1 6-1 Australia's Lleyton Hewitt, the fifth seed, overcame Morocco's Younes El Aynaoui 7-5 5-7 6-4 7-6 (7/4). There was no luck for Frenchman Fabrice Santoro. The 20th seed had to withdraw in the third set against Russia's Mikhail Youzhny, although he was already two sets down. He lost the first two sets 5-7 0-6 and was 0-2 down in the third. In an all-French encounter, ninth seed Sebastien Grosjean, was ousted by Nicolas Escude, seeded 24, 5-7 6-4 6-3 6-4. Pat Rafter booked the final place in the fourth round at Wimbledon with a straight sets win over plucky Moroccan Hicham Arazi. Rafter, beaten by Pete Sampras in the final last year, defeated the Moroccan 7-6 6-4 7-5 to earn a last 16 clash with Russian teenager Youzhny. | |
